Upright (Strava bike) weight analysis

A while back I published a post looking at the weight of my recumbent (the RaptoBike lowracer). Here’s a nice contrast – when I built my upright Strava bike I also weighed all the parts as I was putting it together.

Again (as I keep saying!) I think that weight as a commodity is vastly overrated. Still, I have to recognize that a lot of people disagree, and it is interesting to see where the differences between a recumbent and upright bike are.

As usual I’ve given the weight of the parts in kilos because I struggle to do base 12 mathematics in my head. Apologies to any American readers!

Overall the bike weighs in at 8.3kg in total.

Weight vs recumbent weight

There are obviously ways to reduce the weight of the Strava bike – 350g through a carbon frame, maybe a kilo off with some very light carbon tubular wheels… but that’s not much to the point. It’s as light as I want it to be for the purpose, which really is pretty much just Strava, or social rides where another bike wouldn’t fit so well.

Comparing the Strava bike with the Raptobike, the classic thing that doesn’t really make much difference is the chain – although 200g might sound like a lot, it’s small fry compared with the overall difference of 6.3kg between the bikes.

No, straight away there’s a big jump in the frame weights – including the forks, the recumbent is 2.9kg heavier there. There’s also a hefty jump of 800g between the saddle/seatpost of the upright and the carbon seat, seatpad and mounting hardware of the recumbent.

The steering and controls, drivetrain and wheels are not the same (in the upright’s favour), but that mainly reflects the different specs of the bikes – there’s no reason why I couldn’t fit almost all of the Rival group from the Strava bike onto the Rapto if I had the desire (except the brifters – but they weigh more than bar-end shifters + simple brake levers in any case…)

It looks like whatever happens, the best that you can manage is to get the recumbent weight down to a little over 3.5kg heavier than the upright. Of course, this is comparing against a relatively sporty DF – my everyday “white fright” commuter comes in at 2200g for the frame and 1025g for the fork, 1.4kg heavier than the Strava bike and bringing the weight penalty of the Raptobike over a similarly equipped and more comparable upright to the 2kg mark.

Anyone not hopped on the scales recently and thought they could do to lose a couple of kilos? It’s not going to hold you back…

    We just unboxed the Metabike. 19 pounds 6 ounces (8.7 kg) without wheels or pedals.
    Frogs will add 200grams….it’s the wheelset that will make (or break) the day.
    Of course the groupo is nice, XX on the rear including XX cassete and red up front and a carbon U-handlebar.
    My fantasy is to ride a brevet (someday) here in the U.S. Having only recently read of ‘randos’ and brevets, I’m still weighing in all the factors for wheel/tire/rim decions.
    Luckily I can use 29ers front and back, 26 front and back, or even 29 on the back and 26 up front.
    Why 29er? Well many many miles on a Salsa Fargo (got her down to 21 pounds 6 ounces (9.6 kg) fully decked out (e.g. including wheels and pedals)……so the Metabike can come very close.

      I previously estimated 10.5kg for a disc-equipped Meta in brevet mode, which sounds about right (maybe a little on the light side).

      At that kind of weight, a few hundred grams will make no difference to brevet performance. Sounds like a nice pair of wheels that you can trust to do the distance will top off an excellent build!

  2. That ‘few hundred grams’ is going into the front hub in the guise of a Supernova Infinity 8 and the requisite lamps.
    I’ve decided to go with Stans no tube Crest as the wheelset in 29er form. That which must meet the road is the next imbroglio and so far I’m thinking of the modified cross-type tires that have the smooth center but knobbies on the edges.
    We had a 184 mile ride a couple of weeks ago on the C/O Towpath=lots of mud,rocks,roots and Marathon Duremes let me down-literally into the mud whence upon my body bounced thrice…..granted brevets are on tarmac; that’s why it is engendered in my mind to have some knobbies. Thoughts on something like the Sammy Slick CX?
